Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez: beaches and the Vendée corniche
Trou du Diable and Cinq Pineaux
Saint Hilaire de Riez boasts no less than 10 km of sandy beaches, each bordered by a dune.
It was built up over the centuries. In fact, there was once an island called Ile de Rié, separated from the mainland by an inlet. This was gradually filled in by marine deposits. This is what constitutes the Corniche Vendéenne today.
Head north towards Saint Gilles Croix de Vieand you’ll come across the famous ” Trou du diable ” cave. According to legend, the devil kicked his heel at this point on the cliff, because he was disappointed to have lost his deal with Saint Martin (another Pont d’Yeu legend). A second version tells us that the devil is held in this cave, guarded by five monks: the famous Cinq Pineaux…
This cavity is also known as the “Marmite du diable” (devil’s cauldron), because the water bubbles there as if in a cauldron, and a schist arch, resembling the handle of a cauldron, overhangs it. Les Cinq Pineaux, on the other hand, lies at the end of the Sion cliffs.
